My name’s Sam Handley, I’m a Director at Swiftool Precision Engineering in Nottinghamshire.

Our company employs 120 people and at the outbreak of Covid-19 in the UK, it was deemed that we were amongst the critical supply chain, for both defence and infrastructure.

So that meant that our factories stayed open.

So it was a very challenging time, particularly in those first few days, and we had to make sure that our employees knew that it was a safe place to work, and that the measures we would undertake in that unprecedented time were going to remain with us over the coming months.

Things we have done, include absolute strict adherence to government guidelines of social distancing. Such as, remaining two metres apart, ensuring that we’ve got perspex screens for staff, ensuring we’ve increased our cleaning rotas, that we also split breaks and split lunches. And that anybody who can work from home, continues to do so.

Because we’re in manufacturing this is not always possible.

So we have introduced extra measures, just to be doubly sure.

And these include additional health screening everyday and we have advocated the use of face masks where social distancing measures are not possible on the odd occasion.

Our employees have realised within a short space of time that social distancing measures as business as usual. And feedback has been that because we have consulted with our employees at every stage and been very transparent about our plans that people feel as safe as possible when they come to work at Swiftool Precision Engineering.

We have employed the same tactics at our own precision engineering company. We have customers who supply medical equipment and had to remain open to supply.

I feel proud of all our staff for operating under special conditions and biding by government rules.
